Rider Profile - Daniel Koenig

Daniel Grab

My name is Daniel Koenig and I am 15 years old.  I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  I was first introduced to kiting in the summer of 2000 when my dad took out one of the first “C” kites.  I never really got into it until about 2005 when I was 13.  In the summer I kite at Lake Winnipeg or Lake Manitoba and in the winter I snowkite on fields, floodways and marshes with a snowboard or on ice with skates.  In the in between seasons I go on a soccer field and kite with a buggy.  My favorite time of the year to kite is the summer.  I prefer riding with 10-30 knots Daniel unhookedwith a 7m Crossbow 3.  Some of my best tricks would be my S-Bends, Railies to Blind, or my Kite Loops.  I try to get as big and stylish as possible when doing any trick.  Since I started kiting I’ve been to a couple of competitions.  My first competition I went to Michigan and entered the 2005 Snowkite competition and I came in third in the Snow Skate and fourth in the Freestyle event.  After that I went all the way to the east coast of Canada and entered in the 2006 Canadian Challenge.  There I won first in Junior's Freestyle and first in Junior's Best Trick.  I also came in second in Men's Amateur Freestyle and second in Men's Best Trick.  I just recently travelled to Grand Haven, MI and entered the 2007 King of the Great Lakes competition.  There I won first in Juniors Freestyle.  I live and breathe kiteboarding.  I see huge potential in the sport, especially in Canada.  I would like to promote the Cabrinha brand and the sport in Canada and wherever else my travels take me.  Thanks for checking out my profile!  There are links to a video and a bunch of pictures to check out.  Click them and they should expand.

Local Conditions / Spots:

Manitoba offers up epic year round conditions.  Lake Winnipeg is the 11th largest freshwater lake on Earth and it's kiting potential is virtually untapped.  Lake Manitoba is massive and right next door.  Riders here are spoiled with amazing flat water lagoons, huge sandbars and wide open beaches.  Conditions range from perfect flat water to nice clean waves to vicious lake chop.  The winds are front driven and make for sessions 4 days out of the week on average.  There are days with rock solid winds but many more with gusty, shifty winds.  If you can kite here you can kite anywhere making Manitoba one of the best places in the world to train.  In Winter the snowkiting is epic.  The Red River floodway is perhaps the world's biggest half-pipe at 30 miles long with 70 foot walls.  Oak Hammock Marsh provides a maze of bull rushes acting like natural snow fence.  Between farmer's fields, lakes and all the other places you never have to session the same spot twice.  Our summer season runs April - Oct and our Winter season kicks up end of Nov - March.
